Ministries

Bible Classes

Each week we have Bible classes for all ages on Sunday morning, starting at 9:30 a.m., and on Wednesday Evenings at 7:00 p.m.

Food Program

We strongly believe that helping those in need is a vital part of the mission of the Church.  On the second Wednesday of each month, from 9:00-11:00 am, we have a food give away.  Bags of groceries are given to those who are in need.

Missions

We are a mission-minded church.  For many years we have worked with several different missions throughout the world.

We are currently involved in the work of the missionary efforts in India in cooperation with Broadway church of Christ in Paducah, KY guided by Dr. Mani. In addition, we support the Midwestern Children’s Home, Potter Children’s Home, Northeast Ohio Christian Youth Camp in Lisbon, OH in memory of past members.

Youth Program

We provide a variety of opportunities for all of our youth.  The goal is to help our young people to develop spiritually, socially and emotionally.  We try to find activities that will capture the interests of each young person. Summer youth camps, youth rallies, games and service activities are planned throughout the year.

Our History

In 1952 a small group of Christians from nearby congregations began meeting in what is known as the Jensen Hall in downtown Ravenna.  During the invitation of the services on June 1st, 1952, thirteen people came forward letting it be known that they were willing to start a congregation in Ravenna.  They were our first members.

Brother L.J. Nickles and Samuel Giffen continued to speak to the congregation as it grew in size and faith.  In 1953, the Beech Street property was purchased and work began on a basement.  When the basement was finished, the congregation met there as they worked to complete the building.  On October 2, 1955, after much hard work, the building was dedicated to the Lord’s work.  Brother George LeMasters spoke at that Sunday morning worship, and Brother Lawrence J. Gardner spoke that afternoon with about 180 in attendance.

The congregation continued to grow and flourish and in 1976, land was purchased on Summit Road in anticipation of construction of a new Building.  We have been worshiping in the new building since the Fall of 1998.

We continue to work and serve the Lord just as our founding Elders did.  As they urged us years ago, we continue to, “…bind together the followers of Jesus Christ for the purpose of worshipping God…” and saving souls according to the authority of the Bible.

Worship

What can I expect during the worship service?

The goal of our worship assembly is to glorify God as we search the scriptures to find God’s will for our lives. We believe there are five acts of worship:

Singing

We sing, “a cappella”, without the accompaniment of musical instruments. This is not just a preference but a conviction. Singing is a very important part of collective worship.  We invite you to join with us as we praise God and encourage one another in song.

Prayer and Scripture Reading

There will be several prayers offered during the service. Prayer is very important to our congregation. As believers, we are confident that God hears our prayers and should be worshipped in prayer.  Just as we take time for speaking to God through the avenue of prayer, it is equally important to read from His Word and receive His answers to our prayers through the messages He left us in the Bible.  We look to His word to be the authority in all that we do.

Preaching

Our ministers won’t be wearing any ecclesiastical vestments which set them apart. We believe in the priesthood of believers and that all are equal. The sermons are 25-30 minutes long and always Bible centered.

Lord’s Supper

Each first day of the week (Acts 20:7) we gather together to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 11:24,25).  The Communion service is for believers wishing to remember the gift of God’s Son and the willingness of Jesus to die for us.  The bread is representative of the body of Christ, and the fruit of the vine is representative of His blood that was given to cleanse us of our sins (1 Corinthians 10:16). Plates of unleavened bread and grape juice will be passed throughout the congregation.

Offering

Because of the love that we have for God and His church and the blessings He has promised us through  giving, we give back to Him a portion of our earnings (2 Corinthians 9:6-8.  We do not expect visitors to give, although, we ask that you drop your visitor card in the collection plate as it passes.

At the close of the sermon the minister will “extend an invitation.” Those responding may need prayers, want to be baptized or place membership with our congregation.

Also, a byproduct of our corporate worship is the relationships we develop with one another. Our prayer is that you will form those relationships with us as we worship God together.
